We use live aids to train the assets together with pseudo/synthetic scent aids that are available on the market.
We use shaping by stimulus, safe search methodology that allows the dog to hunt the source of the scent, a passive indication is given on the focal point and we then click, the dog returns to the handler for the reward and they walk away safely through an already searched and cleared area.

The “Five phases of the hunt” are:

  • Search
  • Source
  • Focus
  • Clicker/Recall
  • Reward

We are fully committed to delivering the highest standards of quality canine security services.

We pride ourselves on our dogs’ specializations and this is paramount in our core training values moving forward, in an ever-changing environment of complex explosive makeups and compounds that are developed to try and beat the capabilities of the assets.

Canines are the most versatile, effective, and efficient detection method available. Whereas other detection capabilities are limited in use, a Detection Dog Team, (DDT), can be moved anywhere and trained within a short period of time to detect new and additional odors.

We select possible future assets through a strict trial phase before any purchase is made, to ensure that the dogs are environmentally sound prior to any training. The dogs need to be accustomed to everyday noises, scents, people, and different areas and be unfazed by anything that may distract them.

This final pre-training initiation is paramount to ensure the dogs can work whilst under a “duress scenario”, that can be accustomed to all global theatres.
We constantly train with live aids and you can also maintain imprinting with the use of pseudo training aids if live is unavailable.

This helps to ensure that the assets are always constantly trained on all scents to ensure full operational capability, this includes locally made substances that can easily be imprinted in the specific Country.
We use various training systems during the initial phase to introduce the scents and combine a method known as “shaping by stimulus” to get the desired response.

This system incorporates a safe search ethos that sets us apart from other providers and we adopt the training mythology of the “5 phases of the hunt” and this again combines a great work ethic with safety parameters firmly set and ensures that the team always has a safe route back.

We do not use verbal instructions constantly, we allow/encourage the basic instinct of the dogs’ natural hunt instinct.
We do not reward at “source, rewards are given in a safe environment and well away from the “find”, certain clients prefer to instill the “clicker” methodology which is a well versed and tested means of reward by associative training.

We are fully committed to delivering the highest standards of quality canine security services.

We are fully certified to train and instruct as follows:

  • BS 8517-1:2009 Code of Practice for the use of General-Purpose Security Dogs.
  • BS 8517-2:2010 Code of Practice for the use of Detection Dogs.

We utilize/train within the following standards/guidelines depending on client requests:

  • NASDU incorporating HABC standards of validation.
  • UK Military
  • ACPO
  • FRONTEX
  • AR190-12
  • NAPWDA
  • SMEDDS
  • Other variants as needed/required.

Once proficient on the focus wall, the dogs are moved onto scenario training where we build upon lead and off lead control and introduce natural obstacles that they would have to encounter during normal search work. The dogs are trained to complete their searches in a variety of scenarios including, but not limited to the following:

  • Buildings/rooms of various sizes and shapes, from a single floor to multi-floor entities
  • Vehicles of various types and sizes at a variety of locations and utilizing different scenarios including a practical ECP environment.
  • Open areas to include rummage/building/grassed/dumps.
  • Routes
  • Baggage/parcels

Police Dogs Centre Holland Canine Instructors are trained and certified and we combine baseline Client Country standards with associative training from other global remits.

We combine the above with the four quadrants of operant conditioning to gain the best results from the particular dog and the chosen discipline, much the same way as we do with handlers.
